"Blooming Cart" 12" X 16"
Oil on Linen
When painting "Blooming Cart" in my studio earlier this year, I drew
inspiration from a plein air event I attended in Washington several
years ago. After completing what turned out to be an award-winning plein
air painting, I took several photographs of scenes I especially liked.
This studio painting stems from that event and those photographs. I feel
lucky to find such beautiful scenes so close to my home on Whidbey
Island. As you'll see in the video below, it's a nice place to paint.
Several years ago, the filmmaker asked if I would share an artist's
perspective about the island. I just received his final cut and am happy
to share it with you.

"As an oil painter,
I paint because I like discovering something’s unique beauty, and then
capturing my feelings about it in paint. As I discover each aspect of
beauty I record it with a brushstroke, just like a musical note, only I
do it with a color note of paint. My variegated brushwork and the
textural way I apply the paint do much of the work as I communicate the
beauty that I see in the subject. Part of what makes these paintings
"impressionistic" is that I only paint those elements that strike me, an
edited mosaic of brushstrokes, not a photographic rendering of every
detail. These brushstroke impressions also involve the
viewer...since the detail is not included, the viewer’s own eyes,
emotions, and memories complete the painting."
