COUPEVILLE, Wash.—Although
best known for his award-winning plein air work, James Moore is
increasingly earning a reputation for his ballerina paintings. This May,
collectors will get a chance to see Moore’s dancers, when Insights
Gallery in Anacortes hangs “James Moore: On Point.”
Moore will
exhibit more than 20 paintings, including pieces that capture the
graceful, athletic movements of dancers from Pacific Northwest Ballet
and
Fidalgo DanceWorks,
a regional dance school in Anacortes.
The show
will run from April 30-May 30, with an opening reception that includes
an opportunity to meet the artist the evening of April 30 from 5:30-8
p.m. The show coincides with Insights Gallery’s move to its new location
at 604 Commercial Avenue in Anacortes.
When asked if the
transition from landscapes to ballerinas proved challenging, Moore says,
“No, I have painted figures as well as landscapes.
I paint what I see as beauty. Whether it is the
human figure or
the landscape,
my eye sees patterns of light and shadow, shapes, color
notes, curves,
and angles.
I paint to capture the essential beauty of my subject.
“ I enjoy the
ballerinas because for me painting is like a dance. And like a dancer, I
too put emotion and power into my paintings through my brush strokes. I
try to make each of my ‘color notes’ as deliberate as a choreographed
move. When I’m done each of those abstract shapes merges perfectly to
create a final work of art.”
Last
year Moore, who is the only artist invited to paint with Pacific
Northwest Ballet, created a memorable series featuring principal dancer
Louise Nadeau. That extremely successful series culminated with the
presentation of one of Moore’s pieces as to Ms. Nadeau in honor of her
retirement. She had danced with the company for nearly 20 years.
